Memento mori is a Latin phrase that means "remember that you must die." At first glance, it's not exactly the most uplifting statement, but upon further reflection, it's actually a request for emancipation from living a life focused on what will perish. It’s an invitation to life abundant, to the kingdom of God. Remembering that we must die releases us from frittering our lives away on the superfluous.
Lent is for those who ask questions about the true nature of the kingdom of heaven, who dig for Jesus in the cracks and crevices of daily life. It’s a community for the grieving brokenhearted, for the weary peacemakers, for the searching doubter. During Lent, we will look at the words of Jesus from his Sermon on the Mount, one of the most robust distillations of his theology and ministry. In this dissertation, Jesus provides a clear-eyed and powerful understanding of what it means to pledge your allegiance to the kingdom of heaven.
